Just listening leads to doubt: The impact of social media on public discourse and the erosion of belief in facts
Studies indicate that social networks have had a strong impact on public discussion in the world. As algorithms tend to cater to user preferences, they are increasingly being exposed to opinions similar to theirs, thus preventing the discussion that is the basis of democracy. This article from the Poynter Institute suggests that this confirmation bias is reaching the point where people no longer believe in #proven facts, if these are not in line with their own beliefs.
